Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and the developer of Falah ("we", "us") covering your use of the Falah iOS app. By downloading or using Falah, you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the app.
1. What Falah is
Falah is an iPhone app that helps Muslims pray Salah on time. It calculates prayer times for your location, notifies you when a prayer arrives and when its window is closing, records the prayers you confirm, and — if you choose to use it — restricts distracting apps on your own device during a prayer window until you confirm that you have prayed. Around that it offers the Companion, an AI chat about Salah and the deen; Reflect, which suggests duas for how you feel; the Quran with an English translation; a Qibla finder; a Fajr Alarm; a daily quiz; a step-by-step guide to the prayer; and widgets for your Lock Screen and Home Screen.
Falah is a personal discipline tool. It is not a religious authority, and it does not replace one. Where it teaches — the guide to the prayer, the quiz, the duas — it presents one common way, and the schools of fiqh differ on details. Learn your prayer from a qualified teacher, and treat Falah as a help alongside that, not instead of it.
2. Prayer times and the Qibla are calculated estimates
This section matters more than any other, so please read it.
Falah calculates prayer times on your device using standard astronomical formulas and the calculation convention you select. It does not retrieve times from your local masjid or from any official body.
Calculated times are estimates. Reasonable, scholarly conventions differ from one another, sometimes by several minutes, and two people in the same room may correctly hold different times for Isha. Accuracy also depends on your device's location, clock and timezone being correct, and on the convention and madhab you have chosen. At very high latitudes, where the sun may not reach the required angle at all, Falah applies standard approximation rules that are themselves a matter of scholarly judgment.
You are responsible for your own worship. Where a time matters — and especially where Falah disagrees with your local masjid — follow your masjid or a qualified scholar, not this app. We make no warranty that any time shown is correct, and we accept no responsibility for a prayer prayed early, late, or missed while relying on the app.
The Qibla direction is an estimate too. Falah calculates it from your location and reads which way your phone is pointing from its sensors, which can be thrown off by magnets, metal, cases, electronics nearby, or a phone that needs calibrating. It shows when you are facing roughly the right way, not an exact bearing. Where it matters, check the direction against your masjid, a fixed landmark, or another trusted source. We make no warranty that the direction shown is correct.
The Fajr Alarm is a help to wake, not a guarantee. It rings at a time derived from the calculated Fajr time above, so it inherits that estimate. It relies on iOS's alarm system, your device's settings, sound and battery, and on recognising your prayer mat or sink from the camera, which can fail in poor light or after the spot changes. Do not rely on it as your only alarm where waking matters for work, medicine, travel or anything else time-critical. We accept no responsibility for a prayer missed, or anything else, because the alarm did not ring, rang late, or could not be stopped by a scan.
3. Salah Lock
Salah Lock uses Apple's Screen Time (Family Controls) system to restrict apps you select, on your own device, for a period beginning at a prayer time or at an hour you schedule. A Salah lock ends when you confirm that you have prayed, when you tell Falah you cannot pray right now, or when the next prayer's time begins. A scheduled lock ends at the time you set, or earlier if you end it yourself.
You should understand the following before relying on it:
- It is a commitment device, not a security product. It exists to add friction to a habit you have told us you want to break. It is not designed to be unbreakable, and it can be ended at any time — from Home in the app, by revoking Screen Time permission in iOS Settings, or by deleting Falah.
- Do not rely on it where a locked app could matter urgently. While an app is restricted you may not see its notifications or content. Do not lock apps you may need in an emergency, for work, for medical purposes, for care responsibilities, or for anything time-critical. Choosing which apps to lock is your decision and your responsibility.
- Phone calls, Messages and emergency services are never restricted by Falah. Falah restricts only the apps you select through Apple's picker.
- It depends on Apple. Salah Lock is built on iOS functionality that Apple controls and may change or withdraw. Restrictions are applied by iOS, not by us, and we cannot guarantee that they will always apply exactly when expected.
- The confirmation is an oath you give yourself. Falah cannot verify that you prayed and does not try to. Confirming that you prayed when you have not defeats the only mechanism the app has.
4. The Companion and Reflect
The Companion is the chat tab. Its purpose is establishing Salah, and that remains its subject, but it will also answer questions across the deen — Qur'an, hadith, fiqh, Islamic history, and what is halal or haram. It declines what has nothing to do with the deen at all.
Its answers are generated by an artificial intelligence model — currently Google's Gemini. We instruct it to name the collection or source it is drawing on, and never to invent a precise verse or hadith number it cannot stand behind. Using it requires an internet connection, a signed-in account, and is limited to 20 messages per hour.
Your conversations are saved to your account so you can return to them, and are deleted when you delete your account. See the Privacy Policy.
You should understand what that means:
- AI output can be wrong. A language model can state something inaccurate, misattribute a narration, or word a religious point poorly, and it can do so fluently and with apparent confidence. We constrain it as tightly as we can; we cannot guarantee any particular answer is correct.
- Verify anything you rely on or pass on. This applies especially to a verse or hadith reference. Do not repeat something the Companion told you as established religious knowledge without checking it.
- It is general encouragement, not a fatwa or a religious ruling, and not advice tailored to your circumstances. It is not a substitute for a qualified scholar, an imam, or your local community.
- It is not professional advice. Not medical, mental health, legal, financial, or emergency advice. If you are struggling with something serious, please speak to a qualified person.
- What you type is sent to a third party in order to be answered. Do not enter personal, sensitive, or confidential information about yourself or anyone else. See the Privacy Policy for exactly where it goes and what is kept.
Reflect uses the same model in a narrower way. It chooses three duas from Falah's own collection for the feeling you describe, and writes a short note to go with them. The Arabic, the meaning and the reference of each dua come from that collection, not from the model; the note is generated by AI and everything above applies to it. Reflect needs no account and saves nothing you tell it.
You agree not to use the Companion or Reflect to attempt to make them produce content outside their purpose, to abuse or overload the service, or to extract their underlying instructions.
5. Subscriptions and billing
Using Falah beyond its setup screens requires a paid subscription. In particular:
- The price, the billing period, and the length of any free trial are shown to you in the app before you are charged. Those figures, and not any figure stated elsewhere, govern.
- Payment is taken by Apple through your App Store account. We do not process or see your payment details.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the current period.
- You can manage or cancel a subscription in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- If a free trial is offered and you subscribe during it, any unused portion of the trial is forfeited when the paid subscription begins, where Apple's rules so provide.
- Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store's terms, not by us. We can rarely do anything about a charge, but you may always ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
We may change our prices. A change will never alter a period you have already paid for, and Apple will ask for your consent where its rules require it.
6. Signing in
Falah offers Sign in with Apple, and it is the only sign-in method. An account is required only for the Companion — prayer times, notifications, Salah Lock, your prayer log, Reflect, the Quran and the Qibla all work without one.
Signing in creates an account on our backend. You are responsible for maintaining the security of the Apple ID you use, and for activity that takes place through it. You may revoke Falah's access at any time in iOS Settings, delete your account yourself from Settings in the app, or ask us to delete it at the address in section 16. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. What we do with what Apple gives us is set out in the Privacy Policy.
7. Acceptable use
Falah is licensed to you for your personal, non-commercial use on Apple devices you own or control. You agree not to:
- copy, sell, sublicense, rent or redistribute the app;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits despite this restriction;
- attempt to circumvent, disable or interfere with any security or restriction mechanism, whether ours or Apple's;
- use the app unlawfully, or to restrict the device of another person without their knowledge and consent.
8. Intellectual property
Falah, its name, its design, its written content and its code are owned by us and are protected by copyright and other laws. These terms grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the app. They do not transfer any ownership to you.
The Qur'an and hadith quoted in the app are not ours and are not claimed as ours. The mushaf is drawn with the page fonts of the King Fahd Glorious Qur'an Printing Complex, as distributed by Quran.com, and its English meaning is the Saheeh International translation; both remain the work of their owners. The recordings of the adhan belong to their reciters. Product names, logos and marks of other companies referred to or depicted in the app — for example the names and icons of apps you may choose to lock — are the property of their respective owners, and are used only to identify those apps to you. Their use does not imply any affiliation with, sponsorship by, or endorsement from those owners.
9. Disclaimers
Falah is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.
We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, timely, error-free, or that prayer times, the Qibla direction, notifications, alarms, widgets or restrictions will always be delivered as intended. Notifications and widgets depend on iOS and on your device's settings, battery state and permissions, and may be delayed or suppressed by circumstances outside our control.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data, profits, opportunity or goodwill, arising out of your use of or inability to use Falah — including any prayer prayed at the wrong time, in the wrong direction, or missed, and any consequence of an app having been restricted or of a restriction having failed to apply.
Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Falah in the twelve months before the claim arose, or ten US dollars (USD $10).
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you, and you may have rights under your local consumer law that these terms do not affect.
11. Changes to the app and to these terms
We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of Falah at any time. We may also update these terms; when we do, the "Last updated" date above changes. If a change is material we will make it apparent in the app. Continuing to use Falah after a change takes effect means you accept the revised terms.
12. Termination
You may end this agreement at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections 2, 8, 9, 10 and 13 survive termination.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Canada, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer-protection rules of your own country, and you may bring proceedings there where the law gives you that right.
14. Apple
These terms are between you and us, not between you and Apple, and Apple is not responsible for Falah or its contents. The following apply as Apple requires:
- Your licence to use Falah is limited to use on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service.
- Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Falah.
- If Falah fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to Falah, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim by you or a third party relating to Falah, including product liability claims, any claim that Falah fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of any third-party claim that Falah infringes that third party's intellectual property rights.
- You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and upon your acceptance Apple has the right to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
15. General
If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remain in force. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between us regarding Falah.
